What does the President of the United States actually do?
The president must "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of
the United States," as agreed when sworn into office. The president must
live in the White House and be in charge of the armed forces. Some of the perks of the job--that the president can go
bowling at home and throws the first pitch of baseball season. Notably,
while the text is a first person account of life as a president, the
accompanying illustrations present the president with a wonderfully
multicultural set of faces. Sometimes the president is a boy, at other
times, a girl, and sometimes he's dark-skinned and other times he's
light-skinned. The book provides a clear, enthusiastic description of a great job!
I would love to use this book in my class! How interesting that it uses different kinds of people for the President. I also like that it talks about what one would do if he or she became President. When talking about President's Day this week, I gave my kids the writing prompt, "If I were President, I would..." They had no idea what the President actually does. They all thought he should keep people from speeding when driving. I was searching for something with a little more content on this issue. Sounds like you found it for me!
ReplyDeleteI love the inclusion of different genders and ethnicities in this book! I'm so glad we are (slowly) moving past the time when the president is always a white male.
ReplyDeleteTo define what the president actually does is important. I was in a 1st grade classroom when the teacher asked a question during Math class, "Who says we have to add these numbers?' and a first grader shouted out "The President!" followed a beat later by another student who shouted, "God!" So funny.
